Fix it All! Free for All!

Macalester Sustainability Hosts First Upcycling and Repair Event!
By: Charlee Gorham

On Saturday, July 10 from 3-8pm around 75 Mac Groveland community members gathered in the Sustainability Office and Special Events Office backyards to attend our special first annual Fix it All Free for All event! Students and neighbors alike enjoyed the sunshine, snacks, live DJ, and many opportunities for upcycling with friends. We invited several volunteers from the Ramsey County Fix-it Clinics to repair small electric appliances and teach simple repair techniques. Several folks with the club MacBike volunteered to fix peoples’ bicycles (pictured below). Many of the people who came to the event rode away on freshly tuned-up bikes!

We opened up the Free Swap garage displaying much of our free clothes throughout the alleyway for the community. Several workers from local businesses on Grand Ave visited on their breaks and collected free items from the Free Swap. In the shady backyard of the Special Events Office, five sewing machines were set up for clothing and fabric repairs, with volunteers stationed there to help folks who were new to sewing. One of our student workers artfully crafted many balls of yarn made out of old t-shirts from the Free Swap. Students finger knitted and made art with this upcycled craft.

By the evening after a free Pizza Luce dinner, people danced to the incredible DJs’ international beats: Salif Keita along with Douala Soul Collective. Stay in touch with the Sustainability Office on the platforms below to hear about future events like this one! (Platforms linked on top of page)
