UN Plastic Pollution

While plastic can be very useful, our society has become addicting to single use plastic, which is extremely detrimental to the environment. Around the world, 1/2 of all plastic is designed to be used once, then thrown away. Today we produce 300 million tons of plastic waste every year, or nearly equivalent to the weight of the entire human population. Only 9% of all plastic waste has ever been recycled. 8 million tons of plastic ends up in the ocean each year, mostly flowing in from rivers, greatly contributing to ocean pollution. This plastic waste can persist for centuries. If current trends continue, our oceans could contain more plastic than fish in 2050!
