Living Laboratory Case Study: Bicycling
Course: "Bicycling the Urban Landscape" and follow up independent study
Faculty: Dr. Margot Higgins
Students: Ellie Hohulin and Marlee Yost-Wolff
For the mid-term for the "Bicycling the Urban Landscape" class, Ellie Hohulin and Marlee Yost-Wolff investigated bike infrastructure and policy on campus. As a follow up to the class, the two also did an independent study on campus bicycling. They used this opportunity to research what the campus was doing and if the college could increase the ranking for the Bicycle Friendly University award. While working on the project, the pair also helped find funding for a Dero ZAP program. They also started a bike education session for international students to learn and ride bicycles. Due to their efforts, Macalester moved to Silver status for the Bicycle Friendly University. The Sierra Club even took notice of the two students and published an article about Macalester's Bicycle Friendly University Ranking.
