Green Star Award Winners

Congratulations to the spring Green Star Award winners:

Millie Varley '18, Elston Adelaide '19, Maya Swope '18, Jacob Dorer, Information Technology Services, and Lee Olson, Psychology.

Green Star Award are given from the Sustainability Office for students and staff who have contributed to sustainability efforts on campus. See what the nominators said about the awardees:

Millie Varley '18 and Elston Adelaide '19


Millie and Elston have been the driving forces behind the MacSHARE movement to bring a sustainable food co-op to the Macalester community. Millie and Elston shine in their ability to mobilize students, faculty, and community members together to see a more sustainable food future.

Maya Swope '18


Maya connects community and sustainability through her work as the Sustainability Area Issues coordinator at the Civic Engagement Center In this role, she coordinates environmental service trips to Twin Cities organizations. She is extremely driven by issues of sustainability and works many part-time jobs for watershed conservation organizations.

Lee Olson, Psychology


Lee has been part of lots of sustainability initiatives on campus; she teaches people how to grow lettuce in the winter time and how to repurpose materials for other uses, and is a master seamstress who creates special curtains that help reduce draft and therefore energy use. She is incredibly knowledgeable about and committed to efforts to eliminate fossil fuels. She has helped develop a spirit of sustainability, reuse (creativity and otherwise), recycling, and overall awareness in the psychology department.

Jacob Dorer, Information Technology Services


Jacob literally breaks down every piece of a Mac laptop by stomping on it, and shows the student workers how to do so, and then drops each broken piece of plastic or cardboard into the appropriate recycling or trash can. Jacob is constantly looking for ways to reuse, recycle, and reduce, and leads the way for other by training ITS student workers and staff to do the same.
