Zero Waste at Macalester, 2018

What does Zero Waste Mean?

According to the Zero Waste International Alliance standard, to be considered zero waste, Macalester must reduce the amount of waste sent to incinerators and landfills by 90% from our baseline year of 2008, measuring waste in weight.

What does Macalester do to promote Zero Waste?

  • Compostable containers from Bon Appétit since 2014
  • Bottle Water Ban since 2011
  • Since 2009, Food Waste from Cafe Mac has gone to Barthold Farms, a free-range pig feed operation.
  • Since 2009, Mac Free Swap's trading program has collected items that can be reused by the Macalester Community.
  • One-sided paper is turned into "Onesie Notebooks"
  • Reduction of printing waste through the use of the PaperCut program
  • Promote the use of AusPens, refillable dry erase markers, instead of their single-use counterparts.
